Death at the Bar by Ngaio Marsh
The Crime Club - 1950
This book is a Third Impression
First published 1939
Publishers: Crime Club/Collins 1950
Hard backed
One of Marsh’s most tightly-knit jobs. Victim a famous K.C., poisoned with KNC in the private taproom of a Devon inn while taking part in a demonstration of darts-throwing; plenty of good circumstantial detail leads to supposition of impossible crime. Alleyn, called in both by publican and by local police, does a splendid and fast (24 hours) job of discovering murderer, whose identity is a masterly demonstration in diverting suspicion from the most likely person. Method ingeniously simple, and hence convincing: a very neat job. Virtuoso display of logic at the end, including a delightful false solution propounded by a most amusing Chief Constable. (Review by Hacklehorn)
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a very dark & dusty, no missing pages. The front cover discoloured. All pages are readable, some discoloured. Some hand writing to inside of front & back cover. Inside front cover also has a Billingham Institute Library sticker. The patina only adds to this very interesting book!

The story opens with Rufus assigned to witness the electrocution of Dan Hillyard, a bank robber and murderer of a policeman. It closes with Reed’s return to the death house on a similar assignment. For Prince Charlie by Kate Whitehead
First Edition 1929
‘Though most of the characters in this story are based on history dealing with 1745 rebellion, and with some of the incidents connected with Henry Baker and his wife; yet for the purposes of this story we should like it to be made quite clear that the Graham family are all purely fictitious characters, as well as Henry Macdonald, and are included to lend additional interest to the points we want to bring out in the story’

This is not a newly published copy, but the actual 1929 publication by Epworth Press
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusty, some marks & there is a (ex) library sticker on the inside cover (corner torn), none of the pages are loose and all pages readable and in great condition. The Amazing Quest of Doctor Syn by Russell Thorndyke, 1950
This book is a reprint in Collection Edition from 1950
First published May 1938
Publishers: Rich & Cowan
Hard Cover
Amazing reading……………
This is the fifth in chronological sequence of Russell Thorndike's seven highly entertaining novels about the Reverend Doctor Syn, the apparently harmless vicar of Dymchurch in Kent who led a secret life as a pirate and smuggler.
A Welsh stranger comes to Dymchurch in Kent to advise the vicar, Doctor Syn, that they they are the last two survivors of a Tontine, and therefore joint heirs to an enormous fortune.
What neither of them know is that an unscrupulous villain is planning to murder Doctor Syn and marry the Welshman's pretty niece so as to get the whole fortune for himself. But the would-be-murderer does not realise that the apparently harmless clergyman has a few secrets of his own ...
All of the Thorndike novels were reprinted several times but are now out of print, except "Doctor Syn" which was republished in 1998 by the Romney Bookshop
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusty, no pages are marked but there is an old Ch1ain Libraries Ltd sticker inside the front cover and one small library stamp stating 26th June 1951. Three Stories of Romance by Warwick Deeping, Gilbert Frankau & Ethel Mannin
Original Book Believed 1936
(First edition 1930)
Publisher: Daily Express Fiction Library
Hardcover: 189 pages
Size: 16.2cm x 11.4cm x 2 cm thick
Three love stories included in this volume are each of them excellent examples of the work of the respective authors under whose names they appear.
There is probably no severer test of the ability of a novel-writer than the short story. In order to succeed in this form of fiction, it is necessary to arrest the immediate attention of the reader. The story must be concise and yet complete. In short, to achieve a satisfactory result the writer must be a master of his (her) art. Those to be found among the greatest literary figures of their day……..
The following three love stories are set on the sunny shores of the blue Mediterranean.
Romance Story 1
The Martyrdom of Elsie Parsloe, the young wife of the elderly and morose Dr. Jacob Parsloe, takes place in a “castle” beyond Genoa where the Professor isolates his young bride. Their Villa Pineta, with its romantic half-wild garden, its pines, ilexes, cypresses and, its classic temple half hidden by arbutus and box, overlooks another villa on the opposite cliff and “thereby hangs a tale”.
Romance Story 2
The Judas Tree, which at the time of this happening was just in bloom, sheltered a mysterious house that stood high above the Route Nationale amid vineyards and grey-green olives, with a triangle of blue Mediterranean pinched between red cliff fangs. It is here the owner unburdens himself of his extraordinary love story.
Romance Story 3
In the picturesque little Italian seaside town of Rapallo that Ishbel Hedley hears the strains of Forbidden Music. Author Miss Ethel Mannin, whose books have a tremendous hold on the public, is undoubtedly one of the most famous women writers of the day. Her story is a joy to read!
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusty. Cover is strong! A few pages are marked, but all readable. A truly great book! I have seen this book for sale elsewhere for upwards of £28, so grab a bargain & enjoy these three great romance stories!

You Can’t Gag the Dead by Milton Propper
1941
Publishers: Herbert Jenkins Limited, London
Original book from c1941
Novel, 252 pages
Size: 12cm x 18cm x 4cm thick
When Jeffrey Scott was found brutally murdered in an empty house, the suspects were ready-made. For all these had a motive in common – the Weber Estate.
There was Lionel Weber, the owner of the house who lied from the start, and Michael Keating, cousin to the murdered man, who talked too little and too much. Then there was the man who, with documentary proof, swore that he was Jeffrey Scott and that the victim was an impostor, and finally the hard-faced women who claimed to be the dead man’s wife.
Tommy Rankin called in to tackle a bewildering intricate problem, complicated by the suicide, some years before of Stephen Weber, and was baffled time and again until his patient, brilliant detection brought to light the design of an almost perfect crime.
A truly great read! I have seen this book for sale elsewhere for upwards of £260, so grab a bargain & enjoy!
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a dark & dusty. Cover is strong! A few pages are marked, but all readable. Previous cancelled library stickers inside the front cover. A Few small library stamps throughout the book! This book is very, very rare!

Thus, kingship, with its loneliness, splendour and power for good and evil, is a fascinating subject. What kind of people were they who possessed this godlike power? What did they do with it and what did it do to them? It was with questions like these in mind that I came to write these stories about Kings and Queens in World History – R. J. Unstead
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusty. Cover is slightly stained! A few pages are marked, but all readable. Cancelled library stickers on inside of front cover which has been repaired many years ago with cello tape. Book is general in good condition.

Kings and Queens of England
Illustrated Souvenir, Liverpool - 1953
An exhibition organized by the Libraries, Museums of Arts Committee of the Liverpool City Council in honour of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
Held at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool – May 6th to August 31st, 1953
Superb catalogue of the Kings and Queens exhibition provides a complete text to the exhibition. The present volume adds a pictorial record of it – not complete, but holding enough to convey the theme and quality of the show. Like the exhibition, it devotes the bulk of its space to Royal portraiture, and follows this section with two others. The first illustrates a selection from the coins and personal Royal relics etc. assembled by the City Museums. The second contains a similar selection from the documents and printed materials assembled by the City Libraries. It has been thought right to give the souvenir the benefit of a complete series of portraits of all English sovereigns and their consorts from Henry VII onwards.
Diamond jubilee next year, so time read-up on the Kings and Queens of England in Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II a year after her Coronation.
Unbelievable black & white photographic record of portraits, busts, relics, coins and documents etc
Complete souvenir, no pages loose, slightly rusty staples A little dull as found in the attic, but no damage to pages and fully readable. Superb black & white photographs. Generally great condition for year! A different world!

Memories of a Labour Leader:
The Autobiography of John Wilson, J.P., M.P. 1910
With an introduction by the Dean of Durham and an appreciation by the Bishop of Durham
Original book published in 1910. This is not a newly published copy, but the actual 1910 publication.
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusty, some marked & there is a hand written note on the inside cover, none of the pages are loose and all pages readable and in great condition. The patina only adds to this intriguing book! This book is currently selling elsewhere for approximately £50+ each…….if you can find them, so this is a rare opportunity to buy a genuine original for very little money!
The Man
John Wilson (1837 – 24 March 1915) was an English coal miner, trade unionist, and a Member of Parliament (MP) for more than 25 years.
The Book
Wilson, John (1910) Memories of a Labour Leader: The Autobiography of John Wilson, J.P., M.P. London: T. F. Unwin.
…………at that time there was one law for the employer and another for the workman. It was criminal for a workman to do that which his employer could do with impunity. He could arrange with his colleagues to reduce wages, and lock men out if the terms were not accepted, and turn them into the street to compel acceptance. There was no law to interfere with him. Let the workman want a higher price for his labour, he was liable to find the machinery of the law ranged against him, and there was a class connection, if not an open compact, between the magistracy and employers."
His early life
Born at Greatham, near Hartlepool, his mother Hannah died when he was four. After his father, Christopher (b. 1807 at Greatham), died of cholera when Wilson was ten, he worked in the mines, spent four years as a merchant seaman, and return to Durham as a miner in 1860. Married in 1832 to Margaret (née Firth), the couple emigrated to the United States in 1864, where Wilson worked the mines in Pennsylvania and Illinois. They returned to Durham in 1867; the first two of their five children had been born in America.
Wilson was one of the founders in 1869 of the Durham Miner’s Association (DMA), which led to him being denied employment, but in 1878 he became a fulltime union organiser, rising to become the DMA's general secretary in 1896.
Political career
The Reform Act 1867 had extended the vote to working-class men in urban areas, allowing the election in 1874 of Thomas Burt and Alexander Macdonald as Liberal-Labour Members of Parliament (MPs).
The Representation of the People Act 1884 extended the same qualifications to the county constituencies, enfranchising many miners for the first time. Wilson was elected at the 1885 general election as Liberal–Labour MP for the new Houghton-le-Spring constituency, but lost his seat when the Liberal Party split at the 1886 general election over Irish Home Rule.
He returned to House of Commons in 1890, at a by-election for the Mid Durham constituency following the death of William Crawford, a Liberal-Labour MP who was also Secretary of the Durham Miners' Association.
In Parliament, Wilson impressed as an effective speaker. However, he followed a different political path to many of his mining colleagues. The Liberal–Labour movement had consisted of local electoral pacts between trades unions and the Liberal Party, whereby trade union-sponsored MPs (who received no salary) were politically allied to the Liberal Party, but the movement declined after 1885. The formation in 1893 of the resolutely socialist Independent Labour Party was followed in 1900 by the Labour Representation Committee, which in 1906 changed its name to the Labour Party. The Labour movement no longer depended on the Liberal Party, and the alliance was effectively over when the MPs sponsored by the Miners' Federation of Great Britain joined the Labour Party after the January 1910 general election.
However, Wilson did not join the Labour Party. A primitive methodist, he was a Liberal by conviction rather than by convenience, an admirer of Gladstone who believed in free trade when much of the rest of the Labour movement was following a socialist path.

Our Friend the Dog in Verse: An Anthology 1947
Compiled by A. Llewelyn Pratt
Forwarded by Capt. V. M. Deanne
Publishers: The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
Hardcover: 113 pages
Size: 18.5cm x 12.3cm x 0.7cm thick
Original book from 1947 (First edition 1946)
I would like to appeal to the present and future poets – those lords of our language – who, by their gift of musical adjustment of phrases, can enhance the beauty of truth tenfold, to give us more poems about dogs; for the dog can supply more material for verse than the Nightingale, the Skylark, or the horse, and should be wore wept, more honoured, and more sung.
The ancestor of the dog, believed by many to be the wolf (Canis Lupus), was a most ferocious enemy of man, for, driven by hunger, he would tear living flesh from men’s bones and slake his thirst in their blood – yet can in time be transfigured, by some mysterious influence, into the dog who will die of a broken heart on being bereaved of the presence of man. What human devotion can match that of Grey Friar’s Bobby, the Scotch terrier, who fro fifteen years slept through the rigours of the Scottish winters on his dead master’s grave? – or the case I know, of a terrier who, after witnessing his master’s suicide in a wood near an Indian cantonment, was found several days later nearly dead of hunger and thirst but gallantly driving of the swarm of vultures who sought their carrion? – or lastly, the Guide Dog, who gives freedom of movement to the Blind and guards his footsteps lest haply he should bruise his foot against the kerb?
May this book redound to the credit of the author, the poets, the Blind, and the Friend of Man, his dog! – Captain V. M. Deane, Chairman, Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
A truly great book for all dog lovers!
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusky. A few pages are marked, but all readable. Previous owners hand writing on the inside front cover, but generally in great condition for its age!

Tennyson for the Young by Alfred Ainger
1899
With introduction and notes by Alfred Ainger
Publishers: MacMillan & Co., London
Hardcover: 120 pages
Size: 15cm x 10cm x 1cm thick
Original book from 1899
It is hoped that this volume may be found acceptable in the schoolroom, as well as in the hours of leisure and recreation; but it is distinctly not intended as a schoolbook, nor as an indirect instrument for studying grammar, the English language, or the Lives of the Poets.
The Editor’s aim will have been attained if it proves utterly impossible to make out its content material for an examination paper. With this end in view, studiously avoiding criticism or presumptuous praise, he has limited the Notes to just so much matter as may give the young reader a few facts about the poems and their origin, and explain the few(very few) words or allusions that are likely to be unfamiliar. It is the Editor’s earnest wish, as far as these poems are concerned, to remove English Poetry from the list of subjects the thought of which suggests preparing a lesson. For it is from such unfortunate association that the enjoyment of the masterpieces of English Poetry and Prose by young people is at this moment in danger……..This service the poetry of Lord Tennyson pre-eminently rendered to the Editor of this little volume, and he would fain to make others sharers of his experience. – A. A., Clifton, August 1891
Having spent many years in the under stair cupboard, the book is a little dark & dusky. Cover is coming away and stained! A few pages are marked, but all readable & good condition. Previous owners hand writing on the inside front cover with a Stockton School Board - Higher Grade School stamp. A superbly compiled book and a great way into the poems of Lord Tennyson. A compelling read! Old, well used book that need a good home!

Sunday Telegraph Colour Supplement
The Pope in the Holy Land
January 12th 1964
Superb original 18 page full colour supplement of The Popes visit to the Holy Land.
Over 50 photographs with writing & descriptions.
The whole Christendom ‘journeyed’ with Pope Paul VI to the holy Land. No other pilgrim could have so universally recalled to men’s minds the historical truths of the Christian religion, or so dramatically set forth their meaning in the modern world……..in the Land of his redemption the Pope was a stranger, the half-understood quest of rulers of other faiths. But so, in that same country was his master; and so, in this life, are all followers of a Saviour who had nowhere to lay his head.
Contents include:
For Strangers and Pilgrims, The Annunciation by Beato Angelico, The Nativity by Maestro di Moulins
Bethlehem ‘while bells ring out over the barbed wire’
Nazareth of Galilee
Banks of the River Jordan
Mount Tabor and its basilica
Gethsemane
Via Dolorosa
Stations of the Cross
Church of Holy Sepulchre
Chapel of the Primacy, Sea of Galilee
Amman, Kingdom of Jordan
President Shazar (meeting)
Pope Paul at the Damascus Gate
Plus many more photographs; a fantastic piece of history!
